Globetech II was a successful implementation of state-of-the-art, inexpensive, and efficient computer communications software in a collaborative venture among students from various countries and schools. Seven teams, from five engineering schools, in four countries on three continents participated in Globetech II, as follows:
Prior to the simulation, students started dialogues via e-mail and the Internet. Based on these dialogues, the teams chose which roles they would play in the simulation. International negotiation principles and current issues related to the automobile industry in China and Thailand were discussed in order to anchor the negotiation process. On November 16, 1996, the on-line conference via the Internet's IRC took place. The conference allowed the teams to break down communication barriers. Negotiations continued for the next two weeks, and final agreements were reached and contracts awarded the week of December 2, 1996. The post-negotiation and feedback period ended by December 11, 1996. Globetech II offered all participants a concrete, hands-on project to familiarize them with the complex issues of international technology management and related negotiations. By playing various roles, the students had the opportunity to experience and resolve the negotiated issues from various perspectives quite different from their own cultures and traditions. Their participation also reinforced the concepts of teamwork, personal responsibility and leadership. Students experienced the dynamic aspects of negotiation and recognized how vital their ideas, total commitment and participation were. The project also developed substantial background information that can be used, with minimal updating, for future simulations. ¨ For further information: Dr. Roxanne Jacoby The Cooper Union New York, NY 10003or see Contacts for Further Information |
