Summer Workshops at The Cooper Union

Several Gateway-sponsored workshops took place at Cooper Union this summer.

  • Institutionalization Seminar: A Projects Institutionalization Seminar, led by Dr. Stanley Proctor, president of ABET, took place on June 2, 1997. The participants were faculty and administrators of The Cooper Union. The workshop addressed problems of planning for institutionalization, the institutionalization of pilot projects, and the institutional culture. Participants examined short and long range changes that are needed to ensure the sustainability, development and institutionalization of Gateway-inspired projects.
  • New Teaching Modes Seminar: Twenty-six participants from several New York area Gateway institutions attended. Dr. Larry Leifer, of Stanford University, addressed the topic of "Design Team Performance." Dr. Gary Gabriele, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, centered his presentation on teaching modes in a studio setting. Dr. Tisha Bender, Coordinator of DIAL (Distance Learning Office)from the New School for Social Research, discussed the issue of virtual classrooms and asynchronicity based on her experiences with teaching via the Internet.
  • Women's Leadership Workshop: This workshop took place at The Cooper Union and at an outside site on July 24 - 28, 1997. The project, directed by Dr. Judith Lyczko and Dr. Andrea Newmark, involved 18 female participants from 9 Gateway institutions. The goal of the project was to provide intensive leadership training for women engineers and to develop a replicable model for use in engineering schools across the country. Topics included trust, mutual support, teamwork, leadership, followership, conflict negotiation, motivation and self-confidence within the workplace context of business and professional engineering.
