Cooperative Team Learning Workshop

In August 1997, the University of South Carolina hosted a workshop led by Dr. Sam Hilborn on Cooperative Team Learning. Seven participants from USC, NJIT, and Burlington County College attended. The first day was devoted to familiarizing participants with the use and purpose of all the components of the Software Infrastructure. The second day focused on demonstrations of pedagogical uses of the Infrastructure. Dr. Hilborn uses the software in Electronics and Circuits classes, but the software can be applied to any subject matter.

The software package, developed using Authorware, is intended to facilitate faculty and student use of Cooperative Team Learning in a classroom environment. The Gateway Team Learning Package (GTLP) contains resources for instructors to facilitate collecting student demographic data; forming teams; testing students; encrypting files for security purposes; evaluating work of individuals within a team; and surveying the class to get consensus on issues of concern. The package provides students with resources such as ready access to reference resources; an introduction to the Cooperative Team Learning Concept; examples of how to use Cooperative Team Learning in the classroom; and ready access to team planning records.

Students also have access to an appendix that contains helpful information related to the process of Cooperative Team Learning. Students can use an application that describes the characteristics of each of the 16 possible Myers-Briggs personality types. There are also applications for students to make inquiries about their course grades and their peer evaluation grades. ¨
