For the past seven years,
the University of Illinois' College of Engineering has offered a development program for new engineering faculty entitled
"Teaching College." The primary goal of Teaching College is to help new faculty members be successful in all aspects of their
careers, including executing efficient and effective instruction. Faculty who have completed the program (a)
enjoyed and benefited from camaraderie, (b) noted increased satisfaction with
their teaching, (c) scored higher on student evaluations than nonparticipating
peers, and (d) scored higher on student evaluations than before participating
in the program. We have also been
exploring the use of major course redesign as a means of improving instruction.
