Course Information

Design projects with various structural systems and materials. Taught by Kevin Poulin in 1998 because Professor Meyer was on sabbatical. Professor Meyer: "... I am the only member of the Department with substantial practical experience..though some of my colleagues have gained considerable design experience through consulting and other activities, I feel a special responsibility of imparting to undergraduate students my experience and properly preparing those who want to enter a carrer in structural design (the largest group of civil engineers are structural engineers). The course CE 3127, Design Problems, which I taught 4 or 5 times since restructuring of our design course sequence, is maybe the most difficult undergraduate course, both for students (seniors) and for the instructor. Here we are supposed to design structures, having at our disposal a woefully inadequate supply of tools. The students are groaning (rightly so), that they are getting 3 credits for a course worth twice that much. We are planning to finally change that design course sequence again in the near future to take off some of that pressure.
