Introduction To VOC Emissions From WWTP

The number of organic compounds that have been synthesized since the turn of the century now exceeds half a million , and some 10,000 new compounds are added each year. As a result, many of these compounds are now found in the wastewater from most municipalities and communities. Currently, the release of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and volatile toxic organic compounds (VTOC) found in wastewater is of great concern in the operation of both collection systems and treatment plants. The total emission of VTOCs from municipal wastewater treatment plants in California has been estimated to be as high as 800 tons/yr.
