Indicator Dilution Method

FickÔs law of diffusion at steady state can be used to measure fluid flow according to the following equation:


Q = A /(C0 - C1)


where Q is flowrate (liters/min), C0 and C1 are input and output concentrations (mg/liter) and A is the indicator added per unit time (mg/min). (Figure 28) Oxygen or a dye can be introduced as indicators. This method has been used to study cardiac output.
