Acoustics deals with transmission of pressure fluctuations through media as the result of a vibrational impetus imparted to the media. The mechanical transmission of sound waves is due to vibrational energy passing from molecule to molecule. Acoustic propagation differs from electromagnetic propagation (i.e., involving light, x-rays, gamma rays) in that the former can occur only through matter, whether solid or fluid. Sound cannot propagate through vacuum.
