Welcome Letter and Project Description

We would like to invite your school to participate with a team of engineering students in the fourth GLOBETECH simulation offered via the Internet by the Nerken School of Engineering at Cooper Union, and sponsored by the NSF' s Gateway Engineering Education Coalition.

The GLOBETECH-IV simulation will take place between October 12 and December 07, 1998. Participation is free of any charge. The two projects to be discussed and negotiated during the simulation are:

  1. The retrofit with SOx, NOx, and particle removal systems of twin 500 MW coal burning power plants in China.
  2. The assembly in Africa of 100 mobile dispensary vans per year, equipped with photovoltaic systems to power the onboard refrigerators and other electric power requirements.

The simulation works in the following manner:

The main benefits of this simulation are:

  1. In a relatively short period of time (8 weeks), students have the opportunity to learn global technology management and environmental issues by working on concrete projects,
  2. They substantially increase their familiarity with the use of the Internet for research and team communications,
  3. Learn the specifics of international proposals, negotiations, contracts, etc..,
  4. Improve their team work, leadership, verbal and written communication skills. Foreign students can also increase their proficiency in English,
  5. Both students and faculty have the opportunity to collaborate with other schools and broaden their domestic and international contacts.

In previous years the simulation was well received by students and faculty from such engineering schools as: Carnegie Mellon, Raensselaer Polytechnic, Nancy/ France, Iasi/Romania, St. Petersburg/Russia, and Tokyo/Japan.

The simulation is geared towards junior, senior and graduate engineering students. Since the treatment of the discussed projects is quite general, students from a variety of engineering management, environmental, electrical, mechanical, etc. courses can participate in the simulation. All the required background information and bibliography will be posted on the Internet, on the project's Home Page, prior to September 1, 1998.

For further details about our previous simulations, we encourage you to visit our GLOBETECH-III (offered in the fall of 1997) site: CLICK HERE. or contact Prof. Roxanne Jacoby at: jacoby@cooper.edu

If you are not able to participate, please do us the favor of circulating this letter for the benefit of others who might be interested in this project.

Thank you for your attention,

Prof. Roxanne Jacoby, P.E.
