New Equipment in the Computer-Aided Engineering Laboratory

Chih-Shing Wei, a professor at The Cooper Union, has been gradually acquiring support equipment for a Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) Laboratory through equipment grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Kresge Foundation, and the Gateway Coalition. The term computer-aided engineering includes computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), rapid prototyping (RP), robotics, and engineering modeling and simulation methodologies such as finite-element analysis.

NSF-Sponsored Equipment Grant

Professor Wei received another NSF equipment grant of $38,200 for the 1997-1998 academic year. The grant will be used for acquiring a product realization and RP workcell as part of the continuing expansion and renewal of the CAE Laboratory.

The new workcell comprises a 3-D Systems� Actua 2100 RP system and a Cyberware 3-D scanning station. These devices will better support existing computer-aided engineering courses and projects (such as the Rapid Prototyping & Concurrent Engineering project, which includes OSU, NJIT,

Drexel, Penn, and The Cooper Union). The devices and courses also will provide students with access to state-of-the-art RP and product development technologies.

Additional Lab Resources

Other recent additions to the lab include a plastic injection molding machine by Morgan industries and simulation and control software. These tools better support the instruction of plastics processing and turning processes in several manufacturing and design courses.¨
