The Ohio State Universitys Freshman Honors Program (FEH) can boast a very small loss in new Engineering students for the scholastic year 1997-98. After one semester, 70 of the 71 students who began the program are still involved in Engineering. Furthermore, the students in this program have a higher cumulative grade point average than the students in the control group, which is randomly generated through the Colleges database. In addition, the students in the program have taken more challenging classes and have accumulated more credits than the control group.
The Freshman Honors Program seems to be off to a promising start this year, as well. The test scores and high school rankings of the 104 students enrolled in the program equal, and, in some cases, outdistance last years incoming Freshman class. The increase in enrollment can be attributed to the programs success and to recruiting throughout 1997-98 and during Summer Orientation. One recruiting tool involves the Robot Design-Build project, displayed on video tapes produced during the Spring and Summer Quarters.
