Internet Learning at Poly

The Polytechnic Institute has been able to improve the quality of student learning by implementing the Internet in classroom teaching. Modules are created with environmental models and computational science concepts, then placed on the Internet for students to view. The theories they learn in class can be put to use through this project, because they are able to test their own hypotheses using mathematical models of environmental systems.

Using Javascript, two modules were developed: Air Pollution and Wastewater Treatment Plant Design. The Air Pollution Module gives students the opportunity to study air pollution models interactively, while also benefitting from the experience of using high performance computing methods. At this point the module is also capable of calculating crosswind and vertical dispersion coefficients and centerline ground level concentrations.

Through this program, Polytechnic Institute hopes to increase knowledge about and use of the Internet, to further utilize analytical techniques, and to eventually apply the approach to other courses as well.
