The New Jersey Institute of Technology has developed the Student Technical Advisors and Resource Service (STARS), a new twist on traditional education. The students are teaching the teachers. STARS was implemented to increase the number of faculty using computers to develop homepages, deliver teaching materials, and promote classroom-based student-faculty interaction. The program teams student mentors with "novice" faculty, and provides a "reward system:" with successful completion of the program, the faculty member receives a computer.
As of now, over 50 faculty members have undergone the program, and there is a waiting list to get into it. In-house seminars have been held on the use of computers in educational delivery and distance learning. Plans are underway to hold a conference on using mulitmedia methods for enhanced teaching, using CD ROM in chemistry laboratory courses, and experimental instruction for laboratory experiments. These will be both hands-on and lecture formats.
