Manufacturing/Concurrent Engineering
This course is about the design of products so that they can be manufactured at low cost. We review the end-to-end process by which products are conceived, designed, manufactured, sold to the customer and finality deposed of. The design process is studied and illustrated by means of class exercises and a term project. Three manufacturing processes assembly, injection molding and stamping, are analyzed and design strategies to minimize manufacturing costs are developed. Finally, methodologies to characterize the reliability and safety of new products are presented.
