Disposal of waste requires careful engineering and design to avoid contamination of ground water. High Density polyethylene, a geosynthetic engineering material is used to line waste dumps. It prevents seepage of potential contaminants into the ground water. Basic theory, laboratory methodology and test data for predicting the lifetime of HDPE geomembranes is discussed in the context of waste containment.
