The papers included in this volume provide an overview of the assessment work developed at Cooper during the past few years by various engineering faculty members. The selection includes examples of course assessment (such as "The Pilot Design Studio Classroom," "Evaluation of Multi-Educational Methods in an Environmental Engineering Class"), project assessment ("Assessing Communication Modes in Design Project Teams," "The Assessment of a Learning Technology in a Civil Engineering Program"), and assessment of student populations ("Assessing Success: Female Engineers at The Cooper Union"). The selection also includes papers that provide an overview of the overall assessment effort at Cooper (such as "The Assessment Process at Cooper Union. Strategies Used and Lessons Learned"). The selection of papers included in this volume is an example of good assessment work by committed faculty. Engaging faculty in assessment has not always been easy and continues to pose the same old challenges: helping faculty see that assessment is not time-costly for the benefits it brings, and preserving the ongoing quality of assessment procedures, beyond accreditation cycles. These problems are more acute regarding assessment of courses than they are concerning program or institution-wide assessments. This selection of papers shows that assessment can be done and that it is useful, and it shows that one-on-one collaboration between assessment practitioners and faculty members is not only possible but often necessary. All the papers included in the selection have been presented at various conferences in the United States and abroad.
