The Gateway Materials Group has developed education modules that demonstrate materials science and engineering concepts at introductory and intermediate levels. An interactive tutorial system for aiding students who have difficulty with the pre-lab quiz is developed in addition to the quiz system. While students are taking the quiz they can request "live" help from an on-line intelligent tutoring tool. System brings up similar examples and guides in a systematic manner to help the student to solve the problems. The system tracks the students' previously demonstrated skills and mastery of particular topics and offers step-by-step assistance with the calculations. The 'intelligence' of this system tailors the tutoring needs of each student. It allows suggestions to be made which are more likely to address the student's difficulty, without repeating material that has already been shown to have been mastered. The Intelligent Tutorial System was developed by Dr. Golgen Bengu, Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, New Jersey Institute of Technology. For more information and availability, contact Dr. Bengu at [email protected].
