STUDENT DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES

Students are one of our greatest assets and we endeavor to support them as they become emerging professionals in the field of engineering. This support takes various forms including formation of a student council composed of representatives from each partner institution to offer critical feedback and to assist in the development and implementation of the program.

This document describes the establishment, operation, and assessment of a student writing center within the ECE Dept. of the Univ. of South Carolina. The document is the Ph.D. thesis of Ms. Deanna Elizabeth Ramey titled "Assessing Writing Instruction in a Sophomore Engineering Course:
Iterations of Integrating Writing from 1995-1999" completed in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in English, with a specialization in Rhetoric and Composition. While she pursued her Ph.D., Dr. Ramey was a writing consultant in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Departments Writing Center, a Gateway-supported project that has since been institutionalized as the Professional Communications Center of the University of South Carolina College of Engineering and Information Technology.
This is one in a series of Monographs in Engineering Education Excellence edited by
Edward Ernst, University of South Carolina and resulting from work supported by the Gateway Engineering Education Coalition.

The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) developed a new retention initiative called the Educational Learning Assistant (ELA) Program. The main goal of the ELA Program was to increase the retention rate of EOP sophomores from 74 percent to 84 percent over one academic year. The objective was to develop a special treatment, which included but was not limited to the assignment of role model peers to work closely with the EOP resident and commuter sophomores to provide tutoring, peer counseling, and academic and academic support workshops. Through the funding received from the Gateway Education Engineering Coalition, NJIT was better able to establish a successful outreach program. This program allowed the Educational Learning Assistants (ELAs), who resided in the residence halls, to develop and maintain regular contact with the EOP sophomores, and provide timely feedback to the professional staff who were then be able to implement effective intervention regardless of whether the problem was academic, financial or social-emotional.

Making the Writer the Expert
In this document the author uses the interrelatedness of theory and practice as a means of analyzing the writing of engineering students and uncovering some definitive traits of engineering communications. He brings theories of composition and rhetoric from the humanities into the context of engineering writing and identifies engineering discourse, with its emphasis on clarity, objectivity, and brevity, as a product of Current Traditional approaches to composition.
The document is the Ph.D. thesis of Thomas S. Bowers titled "Making the Writer the Expert: The Importance of Composition and Rhetorical Theory to Writing in the Disciplines" written in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts degree in English, with a specialization in Rhetoric and Composition. While he pursued this degree, Bowers was a writing consultant in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Departments Writing Center, a Gateway-supported project that has since been institutionalized as the Professional Communications Center of the University of South Carolina College of Engineering and Information Technology.

McNair Conference Booklet
| Organization: New Jersey Institute of Technology |
The McNair Program, in conjunction with Gateway, fosters undergraduate research opportunities for students from underrepresented populations. The goal of the program is to expose these students to research opportunities so that more students from these groups will pursue graduate studies. Every year NJIT runs a symposium on the research performed in this program. This booklet describes the projects undertaken by McNair program participants this year, and includes brief biographies of the student participants and their faculty mentors.

Industry wants students who are effective communicators, and one of the main methods of communication in the professional world is through presentations. While knowing how to use an application, such as Microsoft's PowerPoint, is important for a good presentation, what is more important is knowing how to present - what are the qualities of a good slide, how to overcome anxiety, and how to more effectively deliver this presentation. This presentation will describe, through a series of examples and a seven step method, how students can create and present effective technical presentations.

Web Based Tutoring System Animated Demonstration

An interactive tutorial system for aiding students who have difficulty with the pre-lab quiz is developed in addition to the quiz system. While students are taking the quiz they can request "live" help from an on-line intelligent tutoring tool. System brings up similar examples and guides in a systematic manner to help the student to solve the problems. The system tracks the students' previously demonstrated skills and mastery of particular topics and offers step-by-step assistance with the calculations. The 'intelligence' of this system tailors the tutoring needs of each student. It allows suggestions to be made which are more likely to address the student's difficulty, without repeating material that has already been shown to have been mastered. The Intelligent Tutorial System was developed by Dr. Golgen Bengu, Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, New Jersey Institute of Technology. For more information and availability, contact Dr. Bengu at [email protected].
