Drexel University's Women in Engineering program aims to educate girls, parents and middle school teachers about career opportunities in engineering in an attempt to increase the number of women engineering students. The program is equally dedicated to the success of women engineering students from enrollment to employment by providing a network of support.

The program was initiated in 1992 by the Dean of Engineering by forming a committee of faculty and administrators. The committee was charged to identify activities, events and programs that would produce significant improvement in the number of women recruited by and retained within the college.

WiE Committee chaired by Margaret Wheatley ([email protected])

WiE Director Alyson Valentine

The WiE committee is organized into several subcommittees, each of which is described below.

Recruiting and Enrollment Subcommittee

Led by Dr. Margaret Wheatley, the Recruiting and Enrollment Subcommittee develops projects to encourage women to enter engineering, and to enroll at Drexel.

Retention Subcommittee

Develop support services and mentoring for all women engineering students at Drexel (both at the undergraduate and graduate levels). The committee is led by Dr. Athina Petropulu.

Academic Subcommittee

Study academic programs (both undergraduate and graduate levels) and academic life (both students and faculty) from the WiE perspective and initiate projects to affect the necessary changes and enhancements in curricula, in student life and in academic recognition, rewards and incentives systems. The committee is currently led by Dr. Aspasia Zerva.

Fundraising Subcommittee

Initiate projects to generate funds to sponsor WiE initiatives in general, and to develop grant proposals for federal and state agencies and private foundations in particular.

Publicity/Events Subcommittee

Engage in activities to educate the public both within and outside Drexel, and in particular to provide internal and external media coverage about Drexel WiE program.

Women In Engineering Committee Member Affiliations and Subcommittee Assignments

The WiE Committee currently consists of 34 members from every sector of the Drexel Community. Each member of the WiE Committee is also a member of one of the five subcommittees (Recruiting and Enrollment, Rentention, Academic, Publicity/Events or Fundraising).
