Globe Tech VI ( Fall 2000)
GlobeTech, the live international negotiation simulation project developed at Cooper Union under the aegis of the Gateway Engineering Education Coalition, is an outstanding example of the type of collaborative educational experience that is now available to engineering and business students. Developed by Professor R. Jacoby as a laboratory for her course Global Perspectives in Technology Management, it has reached groups of students not only in the US but throughout the world, in countries as diverse as Russia, Japan, Romania, Hungary, and France, and it continues to expand. Though not strictly a design activity in the traditional sense, its aim is to develop skills in students which are essential to a good designer such as working in teams, negotiating, effective communication, and developing a strong sense of values and ethics.

Multi University Design Project and Multimedia Design Modules
| Organization: Ohio State University |
The modules are used at Ohio State in a senior capstone design class and in an elective class on CAD/CAM. There are a number of content modules that can form the basis of lectures in such areas as creativity, ethics etc.

Multi-Year, Multi-University Project
| Organization: The Cooper Union |
The Gateway Mission to make engineering a hands-on, experiential learning experience will be expanded to foster the
interaction of students within their universities in interdisciplinary teams as well as the interaction of these teams with others
across the Coalition.
The Multi-Year, Multi-University Project (MYMUP) will emphasize developing student and faculty potential, apply new
educational technology, expand teams to include freshman and sophomore students with upper-class students, and involve
industry and government partners in order to provide "real problems of real people" to students.
The need to insure that the engineering design process be formalized in engineering education is vital to the Gateway Mission
and MYMUP is a significant extension beyond the traditional.

Smart Street Concept
| Contact Name: Jean Le Mee |
Organization: The Cooper Union |
This project is the result of the collaboration of three Gateway Schools (Cooper Union, Polytechnic University and Florida International University), working together in a Multi-University Project (MYMUP). This report described the design, cost and revenue of the Smart Street Concept. This idea involves the placement of Smart Street structures at key locations, such as Rockefeller Center and The World Trade Center, throughout New York City. These structures encompass all of the pedestrians needs within a compact area, making the streets more convenient and less cluttered. While the citizens benefit, the city will too in that it will make a profit from these structures with no initial investment by the government. All money necessary to erect such structures will be supplied by investors who also stand to make a large profit. The concept of a Smart Street is revolutionary and promises to change the way in which pedestrians view the streets.
