The Assessment and Evaluation focus area has two separate subfocus areas:

One of the Coalition's major objectives is to embed and institutionalize assessment and continuous improvement processes within each of their participating members. We are committed to sharing our progress with all interested educators. Select the links below to view and download Coalition papers, presentations, faculty tools, and surveys. Quality Assurance is the Gateway Coalition's identifier for what is sometimes referred to as continuous quality improvement (CQI). In this case the reference is to the educational aspects of the University rather than the administrative or academic support functions. One can look upon this arena in two ways: as a process (embedded within the evolution of the Coaliton itself and its programs) and/or as an entity unto itself (an independent curricular program). The Gateway Coalition identifies its current attention with the former.

The disciplined raising of questions such as:

  • what is the objective? (for a course, program, function, etc.)
  • who is it for?
  • how will the provider know if the objective is achieved?
  • are there measurables?
  • what are the instruments with which to make such measurements?
is not typical of engineering faculty. Developing a culture which embeds this into the ongoing educational program's evolution is an important step for systemic institutional change.

As with many aspects of the Coalition's program, these issues are not to be viewed in isolation from others; it is an integrated set. In this case there are clear relationships to the evaluation component since evaluation builds on this process to assess the effectiveness of the methods and processes used to achieve the result.

Evaluation has typically been confined to end point inspection of the student's curricular competence and faculty teaching quality through student exams and end of course student evaluations.

To assist the Coalition in assessing the level to which it is achieving its objectives, Gateway has engaged the Office of Faculty and TA Development of Ohio State University to work independently but also collaboratively with the local institutional leadership to develop, organize, and implement a comprehensive evaluation plan for the Coalition which includes both a central component and a distributed component among the institutions.
